Last month, Sterling and I packed up the car for a 2 hour drive, and headed to Montage Palmetto Bluff for a little weekend getaway with Parker. One of my goals for 2019 was to be a tourist in the south. Slowly but surly, we’re checking new spots off our list and enjoying every second of it! From Bluffton to Asheville last weekend and Savannah this coming weekend. Love traveling with my favorite partner in life, even in our own backyard.

HOW TO GET TO PALMETTO BLUFF

Depending on where you’re traveling from, by plane or by car.

Located just north of the Georgia/South Carolina border, Montage Palmetto Bluff is situated just outside Bluffton, SC. From Charleston, it’s a quick 2ish hour jaunt down the road, and pretty accessible by car from lots of cities in the south. If you’re traveling a bit further, flying into Savannah or Jacksonville will be your best option. Savannah is about a 30 min drive. From JAX you’ll be looking at a little over a 2hr drive, but a larger airport with more direct flights.

RESTAURANTS AT MONTAGE PALMETTO BLUFF

OCTAGON | Our personal favorite of the bunch, Octagon is located just off the Inn’s main lobby. The bar, along with outdoor porch seating, overlooks the water, pool and neighboring cottages. I would say it’s the most ‘classic cuisine’ of the bunch. Classic, but not boring by any means. Great locally sources ingredients and well balanced comfort plates. Their Eggs Benedict was phenomenal! Also loved grabbing a glass of wine here after check-in and talking it out to the porch while we waited for our room.

BUFFALO’S | I can’t speak to dinner at Buffalo’s, but their weekend brunch was lovely. The offer a stocked brunch buffet or various a la carte options as well. We sat on the side courtyard, perfect since we had Parker out and about that morning, and enjoying a great selection of morning libations + lite fare before we headed back to Charleston. The Morning Pizzette was our favorite! Anything with an egg on top…sign me up.

COLE’S | Think casual, southern food with a stunning interior and marsh views. Cole’s is perfect for a more casual lunch/dinner, as the menu includes upscale bar-style fare like fried chicken, nachos and smokehouse BBQ. Just outside the main dining room, you’ll find a slew of game options – from corn hole on the porch, to an in-house bowling alley, pool and more. Great for kids, families + large parties.

CANOE CLUB | Sadly this was the only restaurant on-site that didn’t have availability during our stay – that’s saying something, right? Some friends told us they typically have an incredible selection of fresh seafood and best view for dining. Will give y’all a personal update after our next visit!

These are only a handful of restaurants on-property / ones we were able to visit. They have nine southern-inspired venues where guests can enjoy food + bev all day long.

SIDE NOTE – If you’re seeking a night off-property, I can’t recommend FARM Bluftton enough. Reminded us of Napa {which we LOVE} in terms of interior style + food pairings. Very fresh,  farm to table fare, in a relaxed environment.

WHERE TO STAY

Whether you’re seeking an intimate space for a romantic getaway or an entire home for a family vacay, Palmetto Bluff has accommodations to fit your needs. The Inn is considered the heart of the property. Located closest to the spa and the majority of activities around the property. There are also private village homes on-property available to rent, as well as residences and cottages. All have unique aspects and perks. We stayed in a Lagoon Guesthouse {building 11} and love the water views, private balcony and quick access to the adult-only pool and fitness facility.

WHAT TO DO AT MONTAGE PALMETTO BLUFF

Where to begin with this one!? The property is a vast 20,000 acre property, so to say there’s a lot to do is an understatement. From boating and golf, to shooting and horse back riding; there’s truly something for everyone on this property.

We enjoyed an afternoon on the May River cruising on the vintage Grace boat. This boat is a true piece of American history, which was fully restored in 2014 and is now home on the river for small groups of guests and members to enjoy. Followed by shopping in the village boutique, which actually has a great selection of resort brands like RHODE and BB Dakota.

Bikes and golf cart rentals are readily accessible to get you from building to building. Along with frequent, staff driven gold carts looping the property. However if you do fancy a stint into town, Palmetto Bluff’s partnership with Cadillac offers complimentary rides to/from Bluffton and around the property.

OVERALL REVIEW

WORTH IT. Of course all properties are subjective, but Sterling and I both agreed this is one of our favorite properties in the South. It’s not often we re-visit the same property; we’re typically more nomadic in our traveling. Love discovering new + unchartered territory. But there’s something very soothing and comforting about Montage Palmetto Bluff that will keep us coming back…year after year if I had to guess. It embodies that old world charm we love, while having great food options, clean, contemporary interiors and an overall cozy feeling that just feels like home. Would I stay for an entire week? Properly not. But a long weekend – absolutely.

Thank you to Montage Palmetto Bluff for hosting us! We were actually only supposed to stay for two nights, but extended our trip to 3-nights because we loved experiencing the property so much!
