In addition to visiting family in South Carolina, I also had the opportunity to check out Charleston Fashion Week – an East Coast fashion series put on by Charleston Magazine highlighting emerging designer and model talent. These tents may not be Lincoln Center, but Charleston Fashion Week definitely had some amazing talent showcased. Not to mention, I love the fact that healthy competition between emerging designers in encouraged – announcing nightly winners that move on to the semi final showcase. After speaking with several of these designers one-on-one it was clear that they were all simply excited to have their collections {typically 8-12 looks} shown to an audience period. Most of these blooming artists have recently graduated from design school and their hard work is clearly paying off already! The overall winner, however ended up being self-taught menswear designer Afryie Poku, originally from East Africa, now based in Atlanta, GA. Tailored separates with impeccable detailing rocked the runway inspired by a ‘gentleman-like’ look via the 18th and 19th centuries, sweeping both the people’s choice award and overall competition finalist. I think it’s safe to say, the fashion world will most definitely be seeing more of this young man.
