As I sail back into the Miami port this morning, I wanted to share my experience this past week with Fathom Cruises. When my bestie Christina of Currently Exploring invited me to join her on a ‘service cruise’, I was all in! I’ve embarked on mission trips in the past, and have always found them to be a great source of refreshed perspective. We can all get so caught up in the here + now of our day to day lives, we forget how fortunate we really are. It makes our little complaints in life {‘oh, my wifi isn’t working’ or ‘ugh. I have to wake up early for work} seem extra minute. These Dominican sunsets though! #swoonLilly Pulitzer Colorful Dress c/o | Soludos Espadrille Flats | GiGi New York Blue Crossbody

Fathom strives to bring travelers into low income communities to aid locals in various areas. Thus far their routes target Cuba + the Dominican Republic {where Christina + I volunteered}, and have teamed up with local organizations to facilitate volunteer opportunities on the ground in these countries. To our surprise, opportunities have limited space, so by the time we got on the boat to sign up most activities were full. Guess that’s not a bad thing though, right?! We were ‘left’ with an afternoon of pouring Concrete Floors, but I couldn’t have asked for a better impact activity to partake in. It was remarkable to realize our small group of volunteers were able to change a man’s life in a matter of hours by providing something we truly take for granted everyday. This is something people typically have to save for years in order to replace their dirt floors with concrete. The process is helping decrease the spread of disease and infection throughout the communities. Other volunteer activities include Water Filtration, Recycled Paper Arts + Crafts, Reforestation, and more.
Aside from encouraging Impact Activities on board, Fathom offers quite a few different soundings then you may typically see on a cruise – such as ‘The Story of Impact’ or ‘Raising the Next Generation of Changemakers’. These sessions are designed to probe and make you think on a deeper level. However, if you’re in the mood for some ‘traditional cruise’ fun, they have all of that as well – cocktails, lounges, spa, restaurant, fitness center, pool + 3 hot tubs.
